Exclusive: Gou Tanabe’s “The Shadow Out of Time” Manga Set for Release by Dark Horse

Dark Horse Comics cracked open a cosmic doorway on Tuesday, announcing its acquisition of Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time (Toki o Koeru Kage). The eldritch tome will materialize on shelves December 16, with Zack Davisson—veteran translator of Tanabe’s previous Lovecraft works—once again bridging the gap between languages. Steve Dutro weaves the text into its visual nightmare.

Dark Horse whispers this synopsis into the void:

Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee once walked the halls of Miskatonic University as a rational man—until 1908, when reality split like rotten fruit. Mid-lecture, his world warped into alien geometries, leaving his body a hollow vessel for something… else. For five years, his shell moved among men, spewing whispers of lost civilizations and dimensions beyond time. When his true mind resurfaces in 1913, the quest to reclaim those missing years drags him toward ruins where ancient shadows still crawl across millennia.

Tanabe first conjured this manga in Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Beam in April 2018, sealing its final chapter that November.

It joins Tanabe’s growing bestiary of Lovecraft adaptations. Dark Horse unleashed his The Hound and Other Stories (featuring “The Hound,” “The Temple,” and “The Nameless City”) in August 2017, followed by the glacier-crusted horrors of At The Mountains Of Madness in June 2019—a work that clawed its way to a Best Comic nomination at the 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival. The publisher later bound The Shadow Over Innsmouth into a single volume and channeled The Call of Cthulhu in October 2024—which devoured the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel on June 14. Their latest offering, The Colour Out of Space, oozed onto shelves July 1.

Tanabe’s eldritch catalog also includes The Haunter of the Dark, The Outsider, The Dunwich Horror, and now The Shadow Out of Time.

The artist’s descent into madness continues: his Short Stories about Dreamlands manga unearthed Lovecraft’s Dream Cycle from November 2023 to April 2024. Then came Lovecraft no Genei (The Lovecraft’s Phantom), a June 2024 Comic Beam serial that dissolved into the abyss last December.

Update: Dark Horse Comics admits their original October release date was a temporal distortion—December 16 is the true alignment.
