Exciting Updates from the Sentenced to Be a Hero Anime
Fans of the light novel series “Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004” were treated to a thrilling stage presentation at the KyoMAF event on Saturday. The event showcased a new promotional video and introduced two new cast members for the upcoming television anime adaptation by Rocket Shokai.

The anime was initially set to premiere in October but has been rescheduled to debut in January 2026. The series will kick off with a 60-minute special as its first episode. The streaming service will air the series as it releases.
The anime stars a talented team:
Hiroyuki Takashima is directing the anime at Studio KAI. Yoshitake Nakakลji serves as the assistant director and creature designer. Kenta Ihara is responsible for writing and supervising the series’ scripts. Takeshi Noda is in charge of character designs. Shunsuke Takizawa is composing the music. Nobutaka Ike is credited for worldbuilding, and Kouta Sugawa is the prop designer.
The light novel series, published by Yen Press in English, describes the story as follows:
Heroismโa punishment for only the worst criminals. Those sentenced to the fate of a hero are forced to fight at the front lines against the demon king’s armyโand if they die, they can expect to be revived and continue the battle. But when their leader, convicted of killing a goddess, meets another goddess himself, the contract they forge may be enough to change the world…
Rocket Shokai launched the light novel series on Kadokawa’s Kakuyomu site in October 2020. Kadokawa began publishing the series in print in September 2021 with illustrations by Mephisto. The seventh volume was released on January 17.
Additionally, Natsumi Inoue launched the novel’s manga adaptation on Kadokawa’s Dengeki Comic Regulus website in March 2022. The manga’s second compiled book volume was published in April 2024. BookWalker Global is releasing the manga digitally in English.
