The Exciting Debut of “100 Meters”: A New Anime Film

The highly anticipated anime film “100 Meters” made its debut in Japan on Friday, captivating audiences with its compelling narrative and stunning visuals. This cinematic adaptation of the popular manga “Hyakuemu” by Uoto has already garnered significant attention, especially after its world premiere at the Annecy International Film Festival on June 12.

In a move that thrilled fans, ASMIK Ace began streaming the first six minutes of the film on Saturday. This sneak peek offers a tantalizing glimpse into the world of “100 Meters,” setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience. Following the opening scene, viewers are treated to a trailer that further builds anticipation for the full release.

The film’s narrative revolves around Togashi, a naturally gifted runner, and Komiya, a hardworking individual whose obsession with the 100-meter dash began after meeting Togashi. The story explores their journey as rivals on the track, revealing deeper layers of their characters and their shared passion for the sport.

Tori Matsuzaka takes on the role of Togashi, bringing to life the character’s innate talent and determination. Shota Sometani portrays Komiya, embodying the relentless drive and dedication that define his character. The supporting cast includes a roster of talented actors who contribute to the film’s rich tapestry of characters.

Kenji Iwaisawa, known for his work on “ON-GAKU: Our Sound,” directed the film at Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain. The production credits include Pony Canyon, TBS TV, and ASMIK Ace, with Yasuyuki Mutล penning the script. Keisuke Kojima served as the character designer and chief animation director, while Keikankun Yamaguchi was the art director. The film’s producers include Yลซsuke Terada, Yลซki Katayama, and Akane Taketsugu. The musical score is composed by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, adding depth and emotion to the visual storytelling.

The band Official HiGE DANdism performs the film’s theme song “Rashisa,” further enhancing the cinematic experience with their distinctive sound.

“100 Meters” had a preview screening at last year’s Annecy International Film Festival as part of the Work in Progress lineup. The festival described the story as follows:

Togashi is born to run. As a kid, he is naturally gifted and wins every 100-meter race without effort. But in sixth grade, he meets Komiya, a transfer student who is full of determination but lacks technique. In teaching him, Togashi gives Komiya a new purpose: to win no matter what. Years pass by, Togashi and Komiya meet again as rivals on the track and reveal their true selves.

Uoto launched the “Hyakuemu” manga in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app in November 2018, marking the author’s first series. The manga’s third compiled book volume was published in August 2019, further cementing its place in the hearts of readers.

GKIDS will screen the film in North American theaters from October 12 to 14, offering both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub. An opening screening is scheduled for Los Angeles on October 10, providing an early opportunity for fans to experience the film.
