Legendary Director Akira Shigino Passes Away at 70 from Bile Duct Cancer – Anime

Renowned anime director Akira Shigino passed away on Thursday, May 30, at the age of 70, following a battle with bile duct cancer. A private funeral was held by his family and close colleagues.
The official Twitter account for Shigino’s 2019 anime Dino Girl Gauko made the announcement of his passing on Sunday.

Shigino is most prominently remembered for his work on two movies in the Crayon Shin-chan franchise: the 2009 film Crayon Shin-chan: Roar! Kasukabe Wild Kingdom and the 2010 film Crayon Shin-chan: Super-Dimension! The Storm Called My Bride. Additionally, he directed the 1988 Osomatsu-kun television anime adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka’s manga and the subsequent anime film Osomatsu-kun: Greetings from the Suika Star!

Among his other notable works are the Sei Jūshi Bismarck anime, which served as the basis for the Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs series in the United States, as well as directing numerous other anime series including Nanako SOS, Chō Kōsoku Galvion, Magical Idol Pastel Yumi, Kickers, Magical Hat, Karakuri Kengo Den Musashi Lord, Marude Dameo, Time Bokan: Royal Revival, Takoyaki Mant-Man, Tank Knights Portriss, Naisho no Tsubomi, Line Town, and Kochikame THE FINAL: Ryōtsu Kankichi Saigo no Hi, among others.
