This set is a must-have for any fan of Kon’s work or anime in general.
GKIDS recently screened the restored version of “Perfect Blue” in the U.S. on October 3, giving audiences a taste of what to expect from this upcoming release.
“Perfect Blue,” released in 1997, was Satoshi Kon’s directorial debut. The film follows Mima, a pop singer attempting to transition into an acting career, as she faces threats and psychological trauma. Her mind begins to unravel, haunted by a ghostly version of her former self. Kon’s subsequent works, including “Millennium Actress,” “Tokyo Godfathers,” “Paranoia Agent,” and “Paprika,” further cemented his legacy in the anime world before his passing in 2010.
The film has had several releases over the years, including a VHS and DVD release by Manga Entertainment, and a Blu-ray Disc and DVD release by GKIDS and Shout! Factory in March 2019. A steelbook edition was also released in September 2021.
In September 2018, GKIDS and Fathom Events screened “Perfect Blue” in 500 U.S. theaters over two days, earning $420,881 at the box office. The film was also part of Anime Expo’s AX Cinema Nights screenings in September 2023, celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Kon’s “Perfect Blue” was adapted from Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s novel “Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis,” which was published by Seven Seas Entertainment in February 2018. The second novel in the series, “Perfect Blue: Awaken from a Dream,” was released in April 2018.
This upcoming 4K UHD release promises to bring a new level of clarity and depth to Kon’s visionary work, making it a must-own for collectors and fans alike.
