Ai Kayano Joins Voice Cast of Upcoming Awajima Anime Series

Exciting New Addition to the “Scenes From Awajima” Anime Cast

In a recent announcement, Kadokawa unveiled a fresh face joining the voice cast of the highly anticipated television anime adaptation of Takako Shimura’s manga, “Scenes From Awajima,” also known as “Awajima Hyakkei.” The new addition to the cast is Ai Kayano, who will voice the character Ryลko Ueda. Ryลko was a middle school classmate of Kinue and played a pivotal role in encouraging her to apply to the prestigious Awashima Opera School. However, driven by both admiration and jealousy, Ryลko chose to enroll in a different high school.

Morio Asaka, renowned for his work on “Chihayafuru,” “NANA,” and “Galaxy Angel,” will direct the anime at Madhouse. The character designs will be handled by Kunihiko Hamada, known for his contributions to “Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card,” “Chihayafuru,” and “NANA.” Yasuhiro Nakanishi, who has worked on “Chained Soldier,” “Shy,” and “My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999,” will be in charge of the series scripts. Hideki Nakamura, celebrated for his work on “INU-OH,” “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway,” and “Inuyashiki Last Hero,” will serve as the art director. Junko Sakai, known for “My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999,” “Your Forma,” and “Bibliophile Princess,” will be the compositing director of photography. Takahiro Obata, who has composed music for “Cinderella Nine,” “The Promised Neverland,” and “SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary,” will handle the music. Harue Ono will be the color designer.

The manga, which inspired the anime, was licensed by Yen Press in July and is scheduled for its first volume release on January 20, 2026. Yen Press describes the series as a heartwarming tale of friendship, admiration, competition, and jealousy among young girls pursuing their dreams at the prestigious Awajima Opera School.

Shimura, known for her works “Wandering Son,” “Sweet Blue Flowers,” and “Even Though We’re Adults,” launched the manga on Ohta Publishing’s PocoPoco website in July 2011. The series moved to Ohta Web Comic in July 2016 and has since faced several hiatuses, resuming serialization in January 2022 and again in November 2023. The manga concluded in March 2024, with the fifth and final compiled book volume released in May 2024.
