The film will cover episodes 139-146 of the anime and will include newly animated scenes, as well as characters who did not originally appear in the arc. This announcement was made during a 20th-anniversary event held on a Saturday.

The film is being directed by Naoya Ando, known for his work on Paradox Live The Animation. The script is written by Taku Kishimoto, who has previously worked on Fruits Basket and Haikyu!!. The production is being handled by BN Pictures. Yลichi Fujita, who has worked on Gintama and Mr. Osomatsu, is supervising the project. Shinji Takeuchi, known for his work on Fairy Tail and Gintama, is serving as the character designer and chief animation director.

In addition to this new film, the 2013 movie Gintama: The Final and the 2021 film Gintama THE VERY FINAL are getting 4DX screenings in Japan. These screenings are part of the franchise’s 20th-anniversary celebration and will begin on August 22 and November 14, respectively.

The Gintama on Theater 2D series has also seen several compilations. The first, Gintama on Theater 2D: Baragaki-hen (Thorny Arc), had a limited three-week engagement in Japanese theaters in November 2023. The second compilation, Gintama on Theater 2D: Ikkoku Keisei-hen, opened in June 2024. The third, Gintama on Theater 2D: Kintama-hen, began its three-week screening in November 2024. Gintama on Theater 2D: Shinsengumi Crisis Arc opened on February 7, and Gintama on Theater 2D: Kabukicho Four Devas Arc opened on February 21.

These compilations are part of the broader 20th-anniversary celebration of the Gintama franchise, which includes the manga’s debut in 2003 and the television anime’s premiere in 2006. The manga, a science-fiction period-drama comedy, ended in June 2019 with over 55 million copies in circulation. It has inspired multiple television anime series, original video anime (OVAs), event anime, live-action films, and net spinoffs. The manga’s first 23 volumes were published in English by Viz Media.
