In the ever-expanding universe of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, a new chapter is set to unfold with the announcement of an original anime series titled Death Stranding Isolations. This exciting news was revealed by Kojima Productions on a recent Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the franchise’s growth. The series is slated to debut in 2027 and will be exclusively available on Disney+.
The visuals, staff, and debut date for Death Stranding Isolations were unveiled on Disney+. The anime will feature an original story, promising fresh narratives within the familiar yet intriguing world of Death Stranding.
The series will be directed by Takayuki Sano, known for his work on Attack on Titan The Final Season and Bullet/Bullet. Character designs will be handled by illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov, whose previous works include The Wonderland and Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Hideo Kojima himself will serve as the executive producer, ensuring the series stays true to the original vision.
The story of Death Stranding Isolations is set to explore a world where an explosion has led to the manifestation of the dead in the physical realm. These spectral entities, known as Death Strandings, trigger massive explosions that wipe out anything in their path, leading to the isolation of the remaining population. Amidst this chaos, a legendary porter embarks on a journey to transport both cargo and wishes, reconnecting people in the hope of salvation.
In North America, as Sam Bridges traverses the continent to save America, other individuals grapple with their own forms of isolation. An old man seeks salvation through unconventional means, a female warrior aims to ignite a world of constant conflict, a boy harbors a grudge against Bridges, and a girl embraces her loneliness. Their fates and hopes converge as another story of Death Stranding begins to unfold.
The franchise continues to inspire multiple adaptations, including a separate animated film project titled DEATH STRANDING MOSQUITO. Directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto at ABC Animation Studio, the film will also feature an original story, written by Aaron Guzikowski. Additionally, a live-action film adaptation is in the works at Hammerstone Studios, with Michael Sarnoski set to write and direct. The film will be produced by Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster’s Square Peg production company.
The original Death Stranding game, released for PlayStation 4 in November 2019, later launched on PC via Steam in July 2020 after a delay due to COVID-19. The Director’s Cut version, released for PlayStation 5 in September 2021, also became available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in March 2022. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, launched for PlayStation 5 on June 26.
The cast for the sequel includes Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker, George Miller, Fatih Akin, Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, Nicolas Winding Refn, Luca Marinelli, and Alissa Jung.
Kojima Productions, which established a new division in Los Angeles in 2021 dedicated to music, television, and film, continues to push the boundaries of storytelling across various mediums.
