Kawamori’s Upcoming Anime Labyrinth Movie Reveals Star-Studded Cast and Release Date in New Trailer

Attention anime enthusiasts! The highly anticipated new animation project, Labyrinth (Meikyû no Shiori), directed by the renowned Shôji Kawamori, is about to grab the spotlight. The official website has released its second teaser trailer, adding to the excitement. The trailer not only introduces another cast member but also reveals the premiere date: January 1, 2026.

The animation industry buzzes with anticipation, as the teaser trailer for this mysterious labyrinth journey promises unforgettable visuals and a compelling narrative.

The teaser trailer debut marks an exciting addition to the cast, featuring Takuto Teranishi, renowned for his performances in Ramen D Matsudaira Kunimitsu and the stage adaptation of Your Lie in April. Teranishi, known from the idol group timelesz, takes on the role of Suguru Kagami. This character is an up-and-coming entrepreneur who dabbles in pioneering research on the direct interface between the human brain and smartphones. Kawamori, having witnessed Teranishi’s stage prowess, commended his performance, heralding his successful transition into voice acting.

The previously announced cast includes diverse talents:

  • Suzuka from Atarashii Gakkô! will be making her voice acting debut as protagonist Shiori Maezawa and her other self, Shiori@Revolution.

This suspenseful and phychological thriller will follow the storyline of Shiori Maezawa, an ordinary high school student who suddenly experiences an alternate reality after her phone malfunctions. On exploring this strange labyrinth world, Shiori discovers image of herself online that she does not remember posting. Overwhelmed, Shiori is determined to stop her alternate self from spiraling out of control.

Kawamori is leading the project at SANZIGEN, with the story concept developed collaboratively by Slow Curve, Vector Vision, GAGA, and Fuji Television. Slow Curve is also handling the planning and production. The character designs are being helmed by Risa Ebata, known for her work on Macross Frontier and AKB0048. Scriptwriting is in the hands of Taichi Hashimoto, who is also known for his collaborative work.

Kawamori notably announced that the film was inspired by the idea of smartphones being “other selves” that accumulate a mass of personal information. He explained, “I aim to create an emotional, narrative film that blends song and horror, resulting in a unique pop entertainment experience.”

Kawamori is no stranger to the hearts of anime fans. Renowned for his leadership in the Macross series, he is the mastermind behind Variable Fighter mecha design. His extensive work spans multiple popular franchises, including Aquarion, AKB0048, Arjuna, and his groundbreaking work on Jûshinki Pandora.

Rounding out his contributions, Kawamori has made significant strides in mechanical design for films like Patlabor: The Movie and Outlaw Star, and has created iconic works such as The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and The Vision of Escaflowne.
