Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle Challenges Box Office Records

The Japanese film industry continues to dazzle with record-breaking performances and notable releases. Let’s dive into the latest box office triumphs and exciting movie news.

### Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle

Akaza Sairai, the inaugural installment in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle trilogy, continues its meteoric rise. The film secured the top spot in its eighth weekend, raking in 501,000 tickets and 804,473,800 yen, roughly 5.45 million USD. Since its premiere, the film has sold an impressive 22,007,405 tickets, amassing a cumulative total of 31,425,916,900 yen, or approximately 213 million USD. Demonstrating unprecedented speed, Akaza Sairai is Japan’s fastest film to surpass 30 million yen after just 46 days, outpacing its predecessor, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train.

The film’s success story deepens as it surpasses the legendary Titanic to become Japan’s third-highest-earning film of all time. Fans eagerly await the upcoming days when it might even surpass Spirited Away.

Crushing expectations, Haruo Sotozaki is at the helm of the anime at ufotable, which also penned the screenplay. Music lovers anticipate Aimer’s rendition of “Taiyō ga Noboranai Sekai” and LiSA’s powerful “Zankoku no Yoru ni Kagayake.”

### The Exit 8: Infinite Loop

Infinite Loop, based on Kotake Create’s thrilling infinite-loop horror game, The Exit 8, secured the second position in its second weekend. The film generated 466,000 tickets and 666,571,000 yen, approximately 4.52 million USD, from Friday through Sunday. With a total of 1.48 million tickets sold, it has amassed 2.18 billion yen, or roughly 14.15 million USD. Opening on August 29 in Japan, Infinite Loop sold an astounding 672,000 tickets within its first three days, earning 960,867,600 yen—about 6.46 million USD. This impressive opening was a landmark for 2025, marking the highest-grossing live-action film in Japan during its initial three days.

The film had its highly-anticipated world premiere screening at Cannes on May 19, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation. Its iconic poster won the Prix Luciole poster competition at Cannes. The film’s journey continues with screenings at the Centrepiece Section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival in September and the 58th SITGES International Fantasy Film Festival in Spain in October.

Singer and actor Kazunari Ninomiya takes the lead in Infinite Loop, starring alongside Genki Kawamura. In the game, players traverse a subway station trapped in an endless loop, continuously searching for the elusive “Exit 8.”

### Karada Sagashi The Last Night

Hot on the heels of its predecessor, the sequel Karada Sagashi The Last Night premiered in Japan, securing the fourth spot. The film sold 117,000 tickets and earned 147,837,740 yen, approximately 1 million USD, in just the first three days. This new adaptation, penned by Katsutoshi Murase and Welzard, continues the chilling narrative with Kanna Hashimoto reprising her role from the original. The film is based on Murase and Welzard’s horror manga and was crafted with the involvement of Welzard, alongside the screenplay by Harumi Doki and producer Yūki Hara.

Karada Sagashi follows a student, Asuka, as she seeks Haruka’s missing body pieces scattered throughout her high school, all while evading a deadly entity. The definition of a classic horror plot, this film seamlessly blends suspense and terror.
