The highly anticipated third season of the anime adaptation of Tatsuya Endo’s SPYรFAMILY manga has revealed some exciting news. The rock band SPITZ will be performing the opening theme song, titled “Hi o Mamoru” (Protect the Light). This marks the first time SPITZ has created a song specifically for a television anime. The opening animation sequence, directed by Shingo Natsume, known for his work on Space Dandy, One-Punch Man, and Sonny Boy, has been released without credits. The song will be available on streaming services in Japan starting October 6.
The third season of SPYรFAMILY is set to premiere on October 4 at 11:00 p.m. on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, TV Setouchi, TV Hokkaido, and TV Kyushu. It will also air on BS TV Tokyo on October 5. Crunchyroll will stream the new season as it airs in Japan, excluding Asia.
The third season will be directed by Yukiko Imai, who previously served as an episode director for past seasons. The production will be handled by Wit Studio and CloverWorks, replacing the second season’s directors, Kazuhiro Furuhashi and Takahiro Harada. Yuki Takeuchi and Tomomi Sugimoto will oversee the art setting, Keita Watanabe will be the CG director, and Rina Koguchi will serve as the editor. The season will also feature returning cast and staff, with Lilas Ikuta performing the ending theme song “Actor.”
The first season of SPYรFAMILY premiered in April 2022, with Crunchyroll streaming the series as it aired and later releasing an English dub. The second half of the first season premiered in October 2022, followed by the second season in October 2023, which also aired for 12 episodes. The anime film SPYรFAMILY Code: White, which features an original story, opened in Japan in December 2023 and topped the Japanese box office in its first weekend. The film was later released in North America in April 2024 and debuted at #5 at the U.S. box office.
The original manga by Tatsuya Endo is published in English by Viz Media, which describes the story as follows:
Master spy Twilight is renowned for his undercover missions aimed at creating a better world. However, his latest assignmentโgetting married and having a childโproves to be his most challenging yet. Twilight, who prefers to work alone, finds himself navigating the complexities of procuring a wife and adopting a child to infiltrate an elite private school. Unbeknownst to him, the wife he chooses is an assassin, and the child he adopts is a telepath.
The manga is also simulpublished in English on Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service and is available on Viz Media’s app as part of its Shonen Jump subscription. Additionally, the manga has inspired a stage musical adaptation, with the second musical running from September to December this year.
The new season promises to deliver more thrilling adventures and unexpected twists, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
