A fresh, high-quality Blu-ray of the classic original video anime (OVA) “Metal Skin Panic: MADOX-01” is set for release by the company AnimEigo on September 16th. This eagerly anticipated release brings meticulously reauthored content along with a plethora of captivating bonus features. The extras include two director commentary tracks, engaging interviews with the cast, an in-depth featurette on Japan Self-Defense Force military vehicles, and many more enriching additions.
The storyline of this OVA is genuine and full of energy. In the first live trial of the revolutionary hand-crafted battle suit, the “MADOX-01,” the skilled test pilot, Kusumoto Elle, showcases her prowess by obliterating a built-up attacking tank force, all while leaving Lieutenant Kilgore humiliated. Kilgore, fueled by vengeance, gets his chance for retribution when the prototype MADOX inadvertently ends up in the heart of Tokyo. Meanwhile, the MADOX, navigating a series of mishaps, lands in the possession of the ordinary college student, Sugimoto Koji. Koji’s curiosity leads him to engage with the MADOX without proper instruction, resulting in him getting locked in the suit and embarking on a high-speed escapade through Tokyo.
Koji’s predicament is compounded as the active MADOX transmits a homing signal, triggering an intense firefight with Lieutenant Kilgore. The chaos mirrors the previous destruction scenes from famous legend.
In an effort to mitigate the property damage, Elle dons another prototype MADOX with the purpose to locate and rescue Koji from Kilgore’s relentless pursuit. However, Koji faces a dilemma of his own: missing his date means losing his girlfriend forever, and he is definitely inappropriately dressed for the occasion.
Fans will revel in the 41-minute whirlwind adventure as they wait in anticipation for the answers to the burning questions that arise.
AnimEigo recently concluded a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter in 2021, which successfully revived the enthusiasm for this release. The OVA initially premiered in December 1987, and AnimEigo introduced it as their first anime release in 1990. The OVA can presently be streamed on RetroCrush. Additionally, WWWave Corporation’s new anime streaming platform, OceanVeil, incorporated “Metal Skin Panic: MADOX-01” into its library in May.
