Sumikko Gurashi: The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children

The much-anticipated fourth film in the Sumikko Gurashi franchise, titled “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no ลŒkoku to Futari no Ko” (The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children), has begun streaming a captivating clip. The clip, released on Friday, offers a sneak peek into the film’s enchanting world and introduces the beloved Sumikko characters.

The film features the return of Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjล as narrators, adding their distinctive voices to the magical narrative. Directed by Naomi Iwata, known for her work on “Pingu in the City” and “Obake Zukan,” the film promises to deliver the same charm and creativity that fans have come to love. Takashi Sumita, who penned the scripts for the first and third films, is back as the scriptwriter, ensuring continuity and depth in the story. Kaori Hino returns as the art director, bringing her unique vision to the film’s visuals. The theme song, “Kimi no Kasa” (Your Umbrella), will be performed by Kaela Kimura, adding a musical touch to the cinematic experience.

Asmik Ace, Inc. is handling the distribution of the film, ensuring that it reaches a wide audience. The film is set to open on October 31, just in time for the Halloween season, promising a delightful escape into the whimsical world of Sumikko Gurashi.

Sumikko Gurashi, which debuted in 2012, features a cast of endearing characters who prefer to stay in the corners of rooms. These characters include Shirokuma, a polar bear sensitive to cold; Penguin?, a penguin unsure of its identity; Tonkatsu, a leftover pork cutlet; Neko, a shy cat; and Tokage, who hides his dinosaur nature. The franchise has grown significantly since its inception, captivating audiences with its unique and heartwarming stories.

The first film, “Sumikkogurashi โ€“ Good to be in the corner,” opened in Japan in November 2019 and was a massive success, selling over 1.22 million tickets and earning approximately 1.4 billion yen. It also won the award for Best Animation of the Year at the 29th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards.

The second film, “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahล no Ko” (The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), opened in November 2021 and sold about 200,000 tickets in its first three days, earning approximately 250 million yen.

The third film, “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tsugihagi Kลjล no Fushigi na Ko” (The Mysterious Child of the Makeshift Factory), opened in November 2023 and sold 192,300 tickets in its first three days, earning 242,553,320 yen.

The franchise has also expanded into television with its first-ever anime series, which premiered in October 2023. Additionally, a puppet musical ran in Tokyo from August to September 2024, and a new series of anime shorts, “Sumikko Gurashi: Koko ga Ochitsukun Desu” (This Is Where I Relax), premiered on the NTV network in April 2025.
