Top Tokyo Film Projects Unveiled: Ayumu Watanabe’s Anime and Staring at Your Back Live-Action

The Tokyo International Film Festival’s Content Market, TIFFCOM, has unveiled its 23 handpicked film projects for the upcoming Tokyo Gap-Financing Market. This event, set to take place from October 29 to 31 at Tokyo Portcity Takeshiba, assists in securing the remaining funds needed to complete and distribute these feature-length films. Let’s dive into some of the standout selections.

Kicking off with the animated feature, Freedom in the Sky heads the list. Directed by renowned animator Ayumu Watanabe, this project promises an enchanting journey. Watanabe, celebrated for his work on several films from the beloved Doraemon series, Children of the Sea, and Space Brothers #0, bring his expertise to this newest venture. Production for the film is managed by Genco, Inc., known for their extensive experience in the animation industry.

The market also features an intriguing live-action film, Staring at Your Back. This co-production between South Korea and Japan is an adaptation of a popular Japanese manga. Directed by Korean filmmaker Kun-jae Jang and produced by Mocushura Inc., this film marks a significant step in international collaboration. The manga series Staring at Your Back (キミの背中), penned by Kuro Nohara, follows Takeru Inomata, a high school student navigating his daily life until a surprising encounter with a childhood friend ignites new feelings. The manga initially saw publication through Korean publisher 6699press in 2019 and later found its way to English and French readers through publisher, Akata.

The multitude of creative collaborations underpinning this year’s selection highlights the growing diversity in filmmaking. This year’s lineup includes 17 live-action and 6 animation film projects, with contributors hailing from an array of countries including Vietnam, China, the Philippines, and Spain, among others. Additionally, the list includes three co-productions between Japan and Italy, showcasing the event’s commitment to fostering global cinematic ties.

This year, filmmakers can expect a robust platform to connect with potential investors and partners, ensuring the realization of projects that span a spectrum of genres and styles. Through TIFFCOM’s Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, these films are set to secure the funding necessary to bring their unique visions to the screen.
