Detective Conan Author Gōshō Aoyama's Yaiba Manga Gets New Anime

Yaiba Manga by Detective Conan Author Gōshō Aoyama Receives New Anime Adaptation – Anime

Series previously inspired 52-episode anime in 1993

The 24th issue of Shogakukan‘s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine has announced that Gōshō Aoyama‘s Yaiba manga will receive a new anime adaptation, with Aoyama overseeing the project.

The series follows the young samurai boy Yaiba Kurogane, who draws inspiration from Miyamoto Musashi—the real-life swordsman known for pioneering the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū style of two-sword fighting and writing the classic military strategy book, The Book of Five Rings.

Aoyama launched the manga in Shogakukan‘s Weekly Shonen Sunday in September 1988. The series concluded in December 1993 after a total of 24 compiled volumes.

The original manga also served as the basis for a 52-episode anime adaptation that aired from April 1993 to April 1994.

The character Yaiba frequently appears in Aoyama’s Detective Conan series and even made an appearance in the Conan vs. Kid vs. Yaiba – The Grand Battle for the Treasure Sword!! OVA in 2000.

The film Detective Conan: Hyakuman Doru no Michishirube (Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram) achieved remarkable success, selling 7.32 million tickets and earning 10.5 billion yen (approximately US$68.6 million) within its first 22 days of release.

Notably, Detective Conan is now the first Japanese-animated film franchise to have two consecutive films surpass 10 billion yen in earnings in Japan.

Aoyama has also embarked on a new series for the Magic Kaito manga, which began serialization in Shonen Sunday on April 10.
