Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed an upcoming price increase for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. due to economic pressures. Starting Thursday, the standard PS5 will see a $50 bump to $549.99, while the Digital Edition rises to $499.99. The premium PS5 Pro model will now retail for $749.99, reflecting similar adjustments.
This move follows previous price hikes in regions like Europe, Australia, and Japan, where rising production costs and economic instability were cited as key factors. Notably, accessory pricing remains unchanged, providing some relief for consumers upgrading their setups.
The PlayStation 5 continues to demonstrate strong market performance, with recent financial reports revealing over 80 million units shipped globally. This milestone comes just under five years since its November 2020 launch, when it retailed at $499.99 for the standard edition and $399.99 for the digital version. The console’s popularity has remained consistent, hitting major sales benchmarks—50 million units by December 2023 and 40 million six months prior.
Recent hardware iterations include the slimmer PS5 model introduced in late 2023 and the high-end PS5 Pro, which debuted last November featuring enhanced specs like 120 FPS support, AI upscaling, and advanced ray tracing technology.
