Renowned manga creator Machiko Kyō is set to introduce a fresh narrative with Rusuban Neko Kinako, scheduled for release in the digital pages of Morning Two magazine later this month. The announcement came through the latest printed edition of Kodansha’s Morning publication, marking another creative venture for the celebrated artist.

This poignant story centers on a young child and her feline companion who find themselves alone in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and nuclear incident. Their tale unfolds as they maintain vigil in their empty home, awaiting the uncertain return of missing family members.

Kyō first gained widespread recognition with her 2010 work Cocoon, a powerful reflection on postwar Japan that coincidentally shares its anniversary period with the upcoming animated adaptation. The television series, which draws inspiration from this groundbreaking manga, is scheduled for broadcast on NHK this summer, featuring animation supervision by Studio Ghibli alumna Hitomi Tateno and production by Sasayuri Studio.

The prolific creator has maintained a steady output of compelling stories in recent years. Her digital serial Suzume no Gakkō concluded its successful run earlier this year after three collected volumes, while her 2024 work Orizuru continues serialization in Akita Shoten’s Elegance Eve magazine.

Among her notable achievements, Kyō’s Mitsuami no Kami-sama earned critical acclaim, securing the prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The work’s subsequent animated adaptation by Production I.G, titled Pigtails, became an international festival favorite, collecting numerous awards including top honors at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival and California Film Awards.
