The film will open in Japan on October 10. It has already made waves at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it was featured in the Feature Film Competition in June. Additionally, a preview of the film was part of the Work in Progress lineup at last year’s Annecy Film Festival.

The story of The Last Blossom is set in Autumn 2023 and revolves around Akutsu, an elderly inmate serving a life sentence. A talking Housenka flower, which blooms in prison, prompts Akutsu to reflect on his past. The narrative takes us back to Summer 1986, where Akutsu lives with Nana and her son Kensuke in a modest apartment filled with Housenka flowers. The film weaves a tale of a dying yakuza’s one-night comeback and his family’s story, all told through the lens of a prison-blooming flower.

Kaoru Kobayashi and Junki Tozuka voice the protagonist Minoru Akutsu at different stages of his life. Similarly, Hikari Mitsushima and Yoshiko Miyazaki portray Akutsu’s partner Nana Nagata. Pierre Taki lends his voice to the talking Housenka flower.

The film is directed by Kinoshita, with Konomoto handling the script and original concept. CLAP, known for their work on Pompo: The Cinéphile and The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes, is overseeing the animation production. Michinoku-Toge is credited with the concept art, and the band cero is composing the film’s music. cero will also perform the theme song “Moving Still Life.”

Kinoshita and Konomoto previously collaborated on the 2021 anime ODDTAXI, further solidifying their creative partnership.
