Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc Shatters Opening Day Records
The highly anticipated film, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, has made a staggering debut in Japan. Based on the Reze Arc of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s popular manga, the movie sold over 272,000 tickets, raking in more than 420 million yen (approximately US$2.8 million) on its opening day, September 20. The film hit theaters across 421 locations nationwide, with projections indicating it could earn a whopping 5 billion yen (around US$34 million) throughout its theatrical run.
The buzz around the film’s impressive opening day numbers was amplified during a stage greeting event held by the cast at the TOHO CINEMAS Hibiya theater in Tokyo on Saturday. This event followed the film’s midnight screenings in 12 theaters across major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido. Additionally, the movie offers immersive experiences with MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema screenings.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has secured worldwide theatrical rights for the film. In the United States, the movie will premiere on October 24, a few days earlier than its initially scheduled release date of October 29. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom will see the film hit cinemas on October 29, with over 80 countries also set to release it on September 24.
Reina Ueda takes on the role of Reze in the film, bringing the character to life on the big screen.
The story of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc picks up after Denji, now known as “Chainsaw Man,” joins Special Division 4’s devil hunters. Following a date with Makima, Denji seeks shelter from the rain and encounters Reze, a café worker.
The film’s soundtrack features notable artists. Kenshi Yonezu and Hikaru Utada perform the ending theme song “JANE DOE,” while Yonezu also handles the theme song “IRIS OUT.” Maximum The Hormone’s “Hawatari Nioku Centi” serves as an insert song, with a special “Estimated 70% Unredacted Edit” version included in the movie. This longer track was previously featured in the television anime’s third episode.
The original television series premiered on TV Tokyo and five other affiliated channels, as well as on Amazon Prime Video, in October 2022. Crunchyroll streams the anime globally, reaching over 200 countries and territories. The series follows Denji, a teenager living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita, as he navigates a life of debt repayment and devil hunting, ultimately becoming “Chainsaw Man.”
Tatsuki Fujimoto debuted the Chainsaw Man manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018. The first part, the “Kōan” (Public Safety) arc, concluded in December 2020, with the second part, titled “Gakkō-hen” (School Arc), beginning in July 2022 on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service. The manga has surpassed 30 million copies in circulation and has won the Best Manga award at The Harvey Awards for three consecutive years.
The manga’s impact extends beyond the screen, inspiring a stage play adaptation that ran in Tokyo and Kyoto from September to October 2023.
