Angel’s Egg 4K Remaster Showcased at Manchester Animation Festival

The Manchester Animation Festival has unveiled an exciting addition to its 2025 lineup. From November 9 to 13, attendees will have the unique opportunity to experience the 4K remaster of Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s iconic 1985 anime, Angel’s Egg, also known as Tenshi no Tamago. The festival, set to take place at the HOME complex and various other venues in Manchester, UK, promises an immersive journey into the world of animation.

The 4K remaster of Angel’s Egg made its world premiere at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival’s Cinéma de la Plage on May 20. This cinematic event showcased the meticulous restoration of the original film, which was based on a new scan of a 35mm film negative. The remaster has since garnered international attention, with screenings planned at several prestigious film festivals.

Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, will feature the film from September 18 to 25. Additionally, the 63rd New York Film Festival (NYFF) will host the North American premiere in the “Revivals” category, with screenings scheduled for September 27 and 30, as well as October 4 and 6. Beyond Fest in Los Angeles will present the U.S. West Coast premiere on October 5. Spain’s Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival will also screen the 4K remaster during its October 9-19 run.

GKIDS will bring the 4K remaster to North American theaters beginning November 19. The remaster was announced by Tokuma Shoten in May 2024, and Gebeka International acquired the worldwide sales rights shortly after. GKIDS will also handle the home video release.

Angel’s Egg, originally released as an OVA in Japan in 1985, was directed by Mamoru Oshii at Studio DEEN. The story was conceived by Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano, with Oshii writing the screenplay and directing. Amano also oversaw the art direction, while Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada produced the film. The music was composed by Yoshihiro Kanno.

HBO Max will add the remastered version of Angel’s Egg to its lineup as part of a new partnership with GKIDS. This addition follows a screening hosted by the Japan Society at its museum in New York City in September 2023. Prior to this event, the anime had not been released in the West in its original form. Notably, Carl Colpaert’s 1987 film In the Aftermath incorporated footage from Angel’s Egg.

The Manchester Animation Festival is set to be a highlight of the year, offering animation enthusiasts a chance to witness the stunning 4K remaster of Angel’s Egg. This event promises to be a must-attend for fans of classic anime and cinema lovers alike.
