Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjō return as narrators for the film at Fanworks.

Naomi Iwata, known for her work on Pingu in the City and Obake Zukan, is at the helm as the director for this fourth film at Fanworks. Takashi Sumita, who has been involved since the first and third Sumikko Gurashi films, returns as the scriptwriter. Kaori Hino also rejoins the team as the art director, having contributed to the first and third films.

Asmik Ace, Inc. will be handling the distribution of the film.

The new film is set to hit theaters on October 31.

Sumikko Gurashi made its debut in 2012, featuring characters that are slightly negative and prefer to stay in the corners of a room. The cast includes Shirokuma, a polar bear sensitive to cold; Penguin?, a penguin unsure of its identity; Tonkatsu, a leftover pork cutlet; Neko, a shy cat; and Tokage, who hides his dinosaur nature.

The first anime film, Sumikkogurashi – Good to be in the corner, opened in Japan in November 2019 and went on to sell 1.22 million tickets, earning 1.4 billion yen (about US$12.8 million) at the box office. It also won the award for Best Animation of the Year at the 29th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards in June 2020.

The second film, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahō no Ko (The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), opened in Japan in November 2021 and sold about 200,000 tickets, earning approximately 250 million yen in its first three days.

The third film, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tsugihagi Kōjō no Fushigi na Ko (The Mysterious Child of the Makeshift Factory), opened in Japan in November 2023 and sold 192,300 tickets for 242,553,320 yen in its first three days.

The franchise also expanded into television with its first-ever anime series, which premiered in October 2023. Additionally, a puppet musical ran in Tokyo from August to September 2024. Sumikko Gurashi: Koko ga Ochitsukun Desu (This Is Where I Relax), a new series of anime shorts, premiered on the NTV network in the ZIP! morning variety program’s new “ZIP! 1-Minute Anime” segment on April 4.
