The cast also includes Elaiza Ikeda as Nimi Yakushimae, a social worker who oversees the accused; Keita Machida as Kengo Mibu, Taiza’s connection to the criminal underworld who runs a bicycle repair shop as a front; Takuma Otoo as Yoshinobu Arashiyama, who views Taiza and Mibu as his rivals; and Tsuyoshi Muro as Kiyoshi Kyōgoku, the young boss of the Fushimi yakuza group.
“Kujō no Taizai” follows the story of Kujō, a lawyer who is willing to defend anyone, even the devil himself. Set in the chaotic Reiwa era, Kujō operates as the “guardian of darkness,” working behind the scenes to maintain order.
The series will be directed by Nobuhiro Doi, Takeyoshi Yamamoto, and Hiroshi Adachi, with Shinji Nemoto handling the script.
Manabe launched “Kujō no Taizai” in Shogakukan’s “Weekly Big Comic Spirits” magazine in October 2020. The manga’s 15th compiled book volume is set to be published on October 30, with the series already boasting over 4 million copies in circulation.
Manabe is also known for his previous work, “Ushijima the Loan Shark,” which he began in “Weekly Big Comic Spirits” in 2004 and concluded in March 2019. The manga won the General category of the 56th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2011 and was nominated for several other prestigious awards, including the Osamu Tezuka Culture Prize and France’s Angoulême Comics Awards.
The live-action television series adaptation of “Ushijima the Loan Shark” aired from October to December 2010, with multiple seasons and films following. The latest spinoff series, “Yamikin Ushijima-kun Gaiden Yamikin Saihara-san,” premiered in Japan in September 2022.
