The film is set to hit Japanese theaters on November 21, with screenings available in both regular and IMAX formats. Initially planned for a December 12 release in the United States, the film has been rescheduled to an early 2026 release in North America. However, it will still have an awards-qualifying run in North America this year.

“Scarlet” made its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival with five screenings on September 4-5. The North American premiere was showcased at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival as a Special Presentation, with four screenings on September 10-12. Additionally, the film was presented at the New York Film Festival with two screenings on October 7-8. The Animation is Film Festival in Los Angeles featured the film in competition from October 17-19.

Sony Pictures provides an intriguing overview of the film:

From visionary Academy Awardยฎ-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (MIRAI) comes a powerful, time-bending animated adventure about SCARLET, a medieval-era, sword fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in the Otherworld that exists somewhere between life and death, she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?

Mana Ashida stars as the princess Scarlet, while Masaki Okada portrays Hijiri, a nurse from modern Japan. The cast also includes notable voices, with many characters sharing names with those from William Shakespeare’s tragedy play “Hamlet.”

Hosoda is both directing and writing the screenplay for “Scarlet,” aiming for a unique visual style that is neither traditional 2D animation nor Hollywood-style CG. The film is expected to have a distinct feel compared to his previous works, incorporating elements of action and romance. Producer Yรปichirรด Saitรด has confirmed that the film will have worldwide distribution, with TOHO handling the release in Japan and Sony Pictures overseeing the international distribution.

Ashida, who voices Scarlet, will also perform the theme song “Hateshi naki” (Without Limits), with lyrics written by Hosoda.
