Streaming all 51 episodes of the 2005 anime
The streaming service Tubi is currently offering all 51 episodes of the 2005 anime Sugar Sugar Rune in Japanese with English subtitles.
The anime first aired in July 2005.
Yusuke Matsui, known for his work on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time, and Kohei Fujiwara, a producer at Studio Khara, announced a 20th-anniversary project titled “Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcières” at the Japan Expo event in July 2025. This anime short serves as a prologue to the original manga. Additionally, Matsui revealed that a full-fledged anime project using similar CG animation is also in production.
During the same event, it was revealed that the original Sugar Sugar Rune manga will be re-released in the United States, Italy, and Taiwan this year. Udon Entertainment will handle the distribution in the United States. The manga follows the story of two young witches, Vanilla Mieux and Chocolat Meilleure, who compete to capture the hearts of boys in the Human World to become the future queen. They are aided by their mentor, Rockin’ Robin, and their animal familiars, Blanca and Duke. The manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 2004 to 2007 and was previously licensed and released in English by Del Rey.
The story of Sugar Sugar Rune revolves around two best friends and polar opposites, Vanilla Mieux and Chocolat Meilleure, who are sent to the Human World to compete for the hearts of boys. The winner becomes the future queen. Along with their mentor, Rockin’ Robin, and their animal familiars, Blanca and Duke, they navigate the challenges of school and mysterious threats. The manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 2004 to 2007 and was previously licensed and released in English by Del Rey.
