Chainsaw Man Movie Dominates U.S. Box Office with Reze Arc

The movie adaptation of the Reze Arc from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga has made a significant impact at the U.S. box office. The film, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, grossed an estimated USD17.25 million in its opening weekend across 3,003 North American theaters, pushing its worldwide box office total to USD108 million. This marks the third weekend in a row where an anime film has topped the U.S. box office, with two of those films being adaptations of Shonen Jump manga series.

The film’s success in the U.S. is notable, with 63% of its earnings coming from premium formats like IMAX and 3D. The AMC Empire theater in New York City alone contributed USD72,000 to the total. The audience demographics showed a strong male viewership, with 75% of the audience being male and 50% under the age of 25.

Internationally, the film has also performed well. In Japan, it has sold 4.69 million tickets, generating 7.17 billion yen (approximately USD46.9 million) over 38 days. Additionally, the film added USD14.7 million from 46 overseas Sony markets, bringing its international total to USD60.4 million.

The film’s distributor, SPE, acquired worldwide theatrical rights and opened it in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on a Friday, ahead of its originally scheduled release date. Early screenings were held for Crunchyroll members, and the film is also available in RealD 3D and various premium cinema formats like MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema.

The film’s story revolves around Denji, who has become Chainsaw Man and is part of Special Division 4’s devil hunters. After a date with Makima, he encounters Reze, a café worker, during a rainstorm. The film features performances by Reina Ueda as Reze, with Kenshi Yonezu and Hikaru Utada contributing the ending theme song “JANE DOE.” Yonezu also performs the theme song “IRIS OUT,” and Maximum The Hormone’s “Hawatari Nioku Centi” appears as an insert song.

The original Chainsaw Man television series premiered on TV Tokyo and other affiliated channels, as well as on Amazon Prime Video, in October 2022. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime globally in over 200 countries and territories. The manga, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018, has over 30 million copies in circulation and has won the Best Manga award at The Harvey Awards for three consecutive years.
