Studio Ghibli Masterpieces to Shine in 4K on IMAX Screens in 2026
Fans of Studio Ghibli’s enchanting films are in for a treat as GKIDS and IMAX join forces to bring 4K restorations of these beloved classics to North American theaters in 2026. The initiative, announced recently, will see the films reimagined in stunning 4K resolution, offering viewers an immersive experience like never before.
The first film to hit the big screens early next year will be part of a series of 4K restorations overseen by Studio Ghibli animator Atsushi Okui. Okui, who has been instrumental in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since 1993, will ensure that these new versions are as faithful to the originals as possible while taking full advantage of modern technology.
This isn’t the first time GKIDS has brought Studio Ghibli’s magic to IMAX theaters. Earlier this year, to celebrate Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary, GKIDS screened the 4K restoration of Princess Mononoke. The film, which was available with both Japanese audio and English subtitles as well as an English dub, premiered in IMAX theaters across North America on March 26. The response was overwhelming, with the film ranking at #6 in its opening weekend, earning US$3,881,024 from March 28-30. By May 29, the film had grossed US$6,851,056, a testament to its enduring appeal.
Okui’s involvement in the 4K restoration of Princess Mononoke was crucial. His expertise in digital imaging, honed over years of working on Studio Ghibli projects, including his role as Director of Digital Imaging on The Boy and the Heron, ensured that the film’s visuals were preserved and enhanced for modern audiences.
GKIDS has a long-standing tradition of re-screening selected Studio Ghibli films in North America as part of the annual Studio Ghibli Fest. This year, the event featured eight films, each offering a unique glimpse into the studio’s rich cinematic legacy. The partnership with IMAX for the 2026 screenings promises to elevate this experience to new heights, providing fans with an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy these timeless stories on the biggest screens available.
The upcoming 4K restorations are set to redefine how audiences experience Studio Ghibli’s masterpieces, blending the studio’s signature artistry with cutting-edge technology. As we look forward to 2026, the anticipation for these screenings continues to build, promising a cinematic event that will captivate both longtime fans and new viewers alike.
