Mastering the Art of Assassination: Ayato Morinaga and Masaaki Mizunaka in Anime

The upcoming television anime adaptation of Matsuri Akai’s light novel series, “My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s,” has unveiled two new cast members. The announcement was made on Thursday, revealing that Ayato Morinaga will voice Tsukasa Sato and Masaaki Mizunaka will portray Kyosuke Asahina.

The anime is set to premiere on October 6 at 25:30 JST (October 7 at 1:30 a.m.) on TV Tokyo. Following the broadcast, it will be available on the d Anime Store and ABEMA streaming services. Crunchyroll will handle the worldwide streaming, excluding Asia.

The anime boasts an impressive cast and crew. Nobuyoshi Hara, known for his work on the Fafner series and the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 film, is directing the series at Sunrise. Kunihiko Okada, renowned for his scripts in The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman, is in charge of the series scripts. Character designs are handled by Hirona Okada and Kaori Saito, with Masahiro Yamane designing the monsters. Mitsuru Ishihara serves as the main animator, and Satoshi Igarashi is composing the music.

The opening theme song, “Issen” (Flash of Light), is performed by the virtual girls duo VESPERBELL, while the ending theme song, “Like Gravity,” is by BONNIE PINK.

The light novel series, published by Seven Seas Entertainment’s Airship imprint, follows the story of Oda Akira, a seemingly ordinary individual who finds himself in a fantasy world. With his high starting stats and mysterious background, Akira uncovers a sinister plot and faces off against the very king who brought him to this world. With the help of the elven spirit medium Amelia, he seeks to right the wrongs and exact his revenge.

Akai began serializing the original story on the “Shosetsuka ni Narou” (Let’s Become Novelists) website in January 2017. OVERLAP published the first volume in print with illustrations by Tozai in November 2017, and the fifth volume was released on September 25. The manga adaptation, launched by Hiroyuki Aigamo on OVERLAP’s Comic Gardo website in July 2018, resumed in 2022 following Aigamo’s recovery from endometrial cancer. Seven Seas Entertainment will publish the sixth volume of the manga on November 25.
