The Sweet and Decaying Tale of Candy Caries

In the world of animation, stop-motion has always held a special place, blending the charm of traditional puppetry with the magic of storytelling. One such project that has captured the imagination of fans is Candy Caries, an original television anime that is set to debut in April. The announcement came from the renowned director Tomoki Misato and the esteemed Wit Studio, both of whom are credited with the original work. Misato will also be directing the anime at TORUKU from WIT STUDIO.

The teaser visual and promotional video for Candy Caries were unveiled, giving viewers a sneak peek into the whimsical world that awaits them. The stop-motion series, Pui Pui Molcar, directed by Misato, has already made waves with its unique style and engaging narrative. The series premiered in January 2021 within TV Tokyo’s Kinder TV children’s variety program and quickly gained a global audience when Netflix began streaming it worldwide outside of some Asian territories in March 2021. The series’ compilation film, Tobidase! Narase! Pui Pui Molcar, opened in Japan in July 2021, further cementing its place in the hearts of anime enthusiasts.

Candy Caries was first revealed as a stop-motion promotional video in 2021 after Wit Studio established a stop-motion studio with Misato in December 2020. The anime is a slapstick comedy that revolves around Ame, a child with a sweet tooth, and Caries, the tooth decay that lives in her mouth. Caries leads a carefree life inside Ame’s mouth, even calling her “Mama,” and Ame’s body is always at Caries’ mercy. Misato describes the animation style as semi three-dimensional, “flat like an illustration, but plump and thick,” using plastic board and acrylic to achieve this unique look.

The series utilizes stop-motion animated puppets made of wool felt, adding a tactile and nostalgic element to the viewing experience. This marked Tomoki Misato’s directorial debut on an animated television series. Misato also wrote the script and worked on the storyboards alongside Hana Ono and Kei Sato. His expertise was further showcased in the 2024 3D CG film, Pui Pui Molcar the Movie: MOLMAX, where he served as the chief supervisor.

Misato’s directorial prowess was also evident in the stop-motion animation series My Melody & Kuromi, which premiered on Netflix in July 2025. The series won the Best Animation award at Singapore’s 2025 Asian Academy Creative Awards, highlighting Misato’s ability to create compelling and visually stunning content.
