Exciting New Trailer Unveils Characters for Upcoming Sumikko Gurashi Film
Fans of the beloved Sumikko Gurashi franchise have something to look forward to as the official website for the upcoming film, “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko” (The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children), has released a thrilling new promotional video. This marks the fourth installment in the popular series by San-X, and it promises to be a delightful addition to the franchise.
The new trailer introduces two captivating characters: a prince and his loyal companion. The video offers a sneak peek into the film’s enchanting world and features the theme song “Kimi no Kasa” (Your Umbrella) performed by Kaela Kimura, adding a touch of musical magic to the anticipation.

The film will once again be narrated by Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjo, who have returned to lend their voices to the enchanting story. Naomi Iwata, known for her work on “Pingu in the City” and “Obake Zukan,” is directing the fourth film at Fanworks. Takashi Sumita, who penned the scripts for the first and third films, is back as the scriptwriter, ensuring continuity and depth in the storyline. Kaori Hino, the art director for the first and third films, also returns to maintain the series’ distinctive visual style.
Kaela Kimura will once again lend her talents to the franchise by performing the film’s theme song, “Kimi no Kasa” (Your Umbrella). The film is set to be distributed by Asmik Ace, Inc., and will hit theaters on October 31.
The Sumikko Gurashi franchise, which debuted in 2012, has captivated audiences with its unique characters who prefer to stay in the corners of rooms. The series includes Shirokuma, a polar bear sensitive to cold; Penguin?, a penguin unsure of its identity; Tonkatsu, a leftover pork cutlet; Neko, a shy cat; and Tokage, a dinosaur hiding his true nature.
The first film, “Sumikkogurashi – Good to be in the Corner,” opened in Japan in November 2019 and was a massive success, selling over 1.22 million tickets and earning 1.4 billion yen (approximately US$12.8 million) at the box office. It also won the award for Best Animation of the Year at the 29th Annual Japan Movie Critics Awards in June 2020.
The second film, “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahō no Ko” (The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), opened in November 2021 and sold about 200,000 tickets in its first three days, earning approximately 250 million yen (about US$2.22 million).
The third film, “Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tsugihagi Kōjō no Fushigi na Ko” (The Mysterious Child of the Makeshift Factory), opened in November 2023 and sold 192,300 tickets in its first three days, earning 242,553,320 yen (about US$1.63 million).
In addition to the films, the franchise has expanded into television with its first-ever anime series, which premiered in October 2023. A puppet musical ran in Tokyo from August to September 2024, and a new series of anime shorts, “Sumikko Gurashi: Koko ga Ochitsukun Desu” (This Is Where I Relax), premiered on the NTV network in April 2025.
