The Summer Hikaru Died Anime: A Thrilling Return for Season 2
Fans of the hauntingly beautiful anime “The Summer Hikaru Died” have reason to celebrate. The series, based on the manga by Mokumokuren, has been greenlit for a second season. This announcement was made on a recent Saturday, accompanied by stunning illustrations from Mokumokuren and character designer Yลซichi Takahashi.
The original anime premiered on July 5, captivating audiences with its chilling narrative and intricate character designs. It aired on the NTV channel and was available for streaming on Netflix worldwide, as well as on ABEMA in Japan.
The anime features a talented cast and crew. Ryohei Takeshita, known for his work on “Eromanga Sensei,” “Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night,” and “Pokรฉmon: Paldean Winds,” is directing the series at Cygames Pictures and overseeing the series scripts. Yลซichi Takahashi, renowned for his work on “Stars Align,” “Macross Frontier,” and “Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-,” serves as the character designer and chief animation director. Masanobu Hiraoka, who worked on “Snorunt’s Summer Vacation,” is listed as the “Dorodoro” animator.
The ending theme song, “Anata wa Kaibutsu” (you are my monster), is performed by TOOBOE.
The manga, which inspired the anime, tells the story of two boys, Yoshiki and Hikaru, who lived in a village and did everything together. Their lives took a dramatic turn when Hikaru was enveloped by a mysterious light, changing everything, especially Hikaru himself. Yoshiki’s heartfelt wish to always stay by his side is tested as he questions whether there is even a Hikaru left to be with.

Mokumokuren launched the manga on Kadokawa’s Young Ace Up website in August 2021. The seventh volume was published on July 4, and the manga has exceeded 3 million copies in circulation. Yen Press published the fifth volume on March 25 and will release the sixth volume on October 28. The manga has also inspired a light novel adaptation by Mio Nukaga, which was released in December 2023. Mokumokuren has stated that the manga is planned to reach 10 volumes.
The manga was nominated for the 16th Manga Taisho Awards and was listed as part of the New York Public Library’s Best Books list for teens in 2023. It also made The American Library Association’s (ALA’s) Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) 2024 list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Both the manga and its author were nominated for this year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.
The series is also inspiring a stage play, adding another layer of excitement for fans.
