Mitsue Yamazaki, known for her work on “How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?” and “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun,” is at the helm as the director. She will be working with Yoshiko Nakamura, who has a impressive track record with series like “Detective Conan: Zero’s Tea Time” and “The Helpful Fox Senko-san,” to oversee the series scripts. The character designs are being handled by Ai Kikuchi, whose previous works include “How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?” and “New Game!”.
The light novel series, illustrated by YukiKana, was first published by Ichijinsha in December 2020. The novels have gained a significant following, and a manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji was launched simultaneously in Ichijinsha’s “Monthly Comic Zero-Sum” magazine.
The story of “Though I Am an Inept Villainess” is set in a kingdom inspired by historical China, where five clans present their maidens as imperial consorts, with only one destined to become the empress. The frail and beautiful Kou Reirin, known as the “butterfly” of the imperial court, seems poised to marry the crown prince. However, a twist of fate leads to a body swap with Shu Keigetsu, the “court rat,” during the Lantern Festival. Reirin, now in a new body, faces the challenge of navigating the court and avoiding execution, all while embracing her newfound strength.
Ichijinsha will release the 10th volume of the light novels on April 2, and the manga’s eighth compiled book volume was published on February 28. Seven Seas, the publisher of both the light novels and manga in English, has released the ninth volume of the light novels on August 26 and the seventh volume of the manga on May 13.
