Unleashing The Boy and The Beast: Exclusive 4K UHD Release by GKIDS
In an exciting announcement, GKIDS revealed plans to release Mamoru Hosoda’s acclaimed anime film, “The Boy and The Beast,” on 4K UHD for the first time. The release will also include a Blu-ray Disc, distributed by Shout! Studios, and is set to hit the shelves on March 17. The Limited Edition 4K UHD SteelBook will be exclusively available on Amazon.
The new collection will feature a “Making Of The Boy and The Beast” video, a promotional video collection, cast commentary, key staff commentary, teasers, and trailers. This release is part of GKIDS’ ongoing series of 4K UHD releases for Hosoda’s earlier films, ensuring that fans can enjoy these masterpieces in the highest quality available.
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures screened the film in select U.S. theaters on August 18 for a one-day-only event, giving fans a chance to experience the film on the big screen once again.
“The Boy and The Beast” made a stunning debut at #1 in the Japanese box office in July 2015. The film went on to surpass the total box office earnings of Hosoda’s previous film, “Wolf Children,” and became the second-highest-grossing domestic film in Japan for that year. This success underscores the film’s enduring appeal and the director’s mastery of storytelling.
Funimation opened the film in U.S. theaters in March 2016, describing it as follows:
When Kyuta, a young orphan living on the streets of Shibuya, stumbles into a fantastic world of beasts, he’s taken in by Kumatetsu, a gruff, rough-around-the-edges warrior beast who’s been searching for the perfect apprentice. Despite their constant bickering, Kyuta and Kumatetsu begin training together and slowly form a bond as surrogate father and son. But when a deep darkness threatens to throw the human and beast worlds into chaos, the strong bond between this unlikely pair will be put to the ultimate test—a final showdown that will only be won if the two can finally work together using all of their combined strength and courage.
Hosoda, known for his previous works such as “Summer Wars” and “Wolf Children,” created and scripted the movie. The film was Hosoda’s first project since 2012, when his animation studio, Studio Chizu, revealed “Wolf Children” as its inaugural project. Masakatsu Takagi, who also scored the soundtrack for “Wolf Children,” composed the music for “The Boy and The Beast.”
