Netflix has unveiled a captivating new video for Shingo Yamashita’s upcoming anime film, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! The clip, released on a recent Saturday, offers a glimpse into the enchanting encounter between the characters Iroha and Kaguya.
The video is available with multiple subtitle and audio language options, ensuring a broad audience can enjoy the preview.
Netflix will premiere the film on January 22. The streaming giant provides an intriguing overview of the film’s narrative:
Tsukuyomi is a virtual realm where hopes and dreams converge. Iroha Sakayori, a 17-year-old high school student in Tokyo, juggles part-time work and academics, finding solace in watching Yachiyo Runami, a popular streamer who manages an online virtual space called Tsukuyomi.
Iroha frequents Tsukuyomi, where individuals can lead alternative lives and explore their creativity freely. She spends her time supporting Yachiyo and participating in battle games to earn extra money.
One day, on her way home, Iroha discovers a telephone pole glowing with iridescent colors. To her astonishment, a charming baby emerges from the pole. Unable to leave the infant behind, Iroha takes her home and watches as she rapidly grows into a girl her own age.
“Are you Princess Kaguya?” Iroha wonders.
The grown-up Kaguya develops a self-indulgent personality. At Kaguya’s insistence, Iroha helps her start streaming in Tsukuyomi. With Iroha as producer and songwriter and Kaguya as streamer and singer, the two grow closer. Unbeknownst to them, sinister forces lurk, eager to reclaim Kaguya and return her to the moon.
This film presents a unique retelling of Princess Kaguya’s story.
The movie features a talented voice cast, including Rie Kugimiya, who voices Fushi, a fluffy sea slug and Yachiyo’s partner.
Yamashita, known for his work on Pokémon: Twilight Wings, the opening animation for Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the 2022 adaptation of Urusei Yatsura, makes his feature-length directorial debut. This project is a collaboration between his Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido. Hechima and Akihiro Nagae are responsible for the character designs, with Hechima focusing on the Tsukuyomi designs and Nagae handling the real-world character designs.
Saori Hayami, voicing Yachiyo, performs the theme song “Ex-Otogibanashi” (“Ex-Fairy Tale”), composed by Ryo of supercell.
The film also includes songs by renowned Vocaloid producers such as Ryo, kz, 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.
Additionally, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has a manga adaptation by Tarō Yoneda, which debuted with the first two chapters in Kadokawa’s Comptiq magazine on January 9. A novel by Naruto Kiriyama, with illustrations by Asao Urata, is set to release on January 30, with Yamashita overseeing the project.
