The worldwide acclaim surrounding the animated film “100 Meters” is poised to reach North American shores this October, marking a significant milestone for fans of the genre. The Japanese animation adaptation of “Hyakuemu,” a profoundly inspiring manga penned by Uoto, will grace theaters nationwide in both its original language with English subtitles and in an English-dubbed version.
The highly anticipated screening kicks off on October 10, with a premiere event in Los Angeles. Following the opening night, additional screenings are scheduled from October 12-14 across various North American theaters. Movie enthusiasts can already get a sneak peek with the English-subtitled trailer provided by the production team:
A special first look at the film was showcased during the prestigious Annecy International Film Festival in June. Since then, anticipation has grown as the movie readies for its domestic release in Japan on September 19. Its extraordinary blend of talent is set to deliver a gripping narrative that resonates deeply with viewers.
The anime visionary Kenji Iwaisawa, renowned for his groundbreaking work, is at the helm of this production. Tori Matsuzaka and Shota Sometani lead the acting ensemble, bringing depth and authenticity to characters Togashi and Komiya, respectively. Matsuzaka embodies the gifted runner Togashi, a natural prodigy on the track. In contrast, Sometani portrays Komiya, a relentless competitor whose obsession with the 100-meter dash was ignited by his encounter with Togashi.
Additional key contributors to the film include Yasuyuki Mutō, who takes charge of the scriptwriting, and Keisuke Kojima, responsible for character design and leading the animation team. Keikankun Yamaguchi ensures stunning visuals as the art director, while the musical score is masterfully composed by Hiroaki Tsutsumi. The film’s title track, “Rashisa,” is performed by the band Official HiGE DANdism, adding another layer of excitement to the project.
The “Hyakuemu” manga, originally published by Uoto on the Magazine Pocket app, has gained significant popularity since its release in 2018. Inspired by the manga’s compelling storyline, GKIDS, the prestigious distributor behind this film, has ensured that the essence of Uoto’s work is faithfully translated to the screen.
This visually captivating story tells the tale of Togashi and Komiya, where youthful camaraderie and intense rivalry intersect. Togashi, naturally gifted in sprinting from a young age, crosses paths with Komiya, a transfer student oozing with resolve and ambition but lacking in technique. This meeting sparks a transformative journey for both, leading to a pivotal rivalry that transcends the track. Their narratives unfold against the backdrop of life’s unpredictable turns and resolutions, delivering an intricately woven tale of perseverance and friendship.
