Unveiling the Thrilling World of “Fūto Tantei: Kamen Rider Skull no Shōzō”

In a thrilling development for fans of the iconic Kamen Rider series, the anime film “Fūto Tantei: Kamen Rider Skull no Shōzō” (Fuuto Pi: The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull) has begun streaming on Crunchyroll. This cinematic adventure is a significant addition to the FUUTO PI franchise, which is based on the popular manga “Fūto Tantei.”

The film had a limited theatrical release in Japanese theaters in November 2024, offering viewers a unique glimpse into the origins of Kamen Rider W. The story delves into the early days of this beloved character, providing a fresh perspective on the series’ lore.

One of the standout features of the film is its theme song, “Niau Otoko ni Nare” (Become a Worthy Man). This powerful track is written, composed, and performed by Kouji Kikkawa, who reprises his role as Sōkichi Narumi from the original Kamen Rider W series. Kikkawa’s involvement adds a layer of authenticity and nostalgia for longtime fans.

The voice cast includes a mix of returning and new talent. Kenjirō Tsuda lends his voice to the character Sōkichi Narumi, while Ayumu Murase portrays a young Shōtarō Hidari. Satomi Satou takes on the role of the villain Saeko Sonozaki/Taboo Dopant, and Jun Fukuyama introduces a new character, Nagi Ōshima.

Behind the scenes, Yousuke Kabashima returns to direct the film at Studio KAI, with Ayataka Tanemura serving as assistant director. Toei Video handles the distribution, ensuring that the film reaches a wide audience. The creative team includes scriptwriter Tatsuto Higuchi, character designer Hidekazu Ebina, and chief animation director Kiyoshi Komatsubara. The film’s score is composed by Kōtarō Nakagawa and Shuhei Naruse, with Hideaki Tsukada as the executive producer and Akira Onodera as the supervisor. Key animators include Kazuki Kimura, Ken Obata, Kenta Yokoya, and Shun Shibata.

The “Fūto Tantei” manga, which serves as the foundation for this film, is a sequel project to the 2009 Kamen Rider W series. Riku Sanjō, a key writer from the original series, is responsible for the manga’s scripts, while Masaki Satou brings the story to life with his illustrations. The manga debuted in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine in August 2017 and has since captivated readers with its compelling narrative.

Toei describes the manga as follows:

FUUTO is under the protection of Shotaro and Philip, But bizarre incidents continue to occur frequently on the far side of the city. Tokime, a mysterious beauty, appears and a new evil casts its shadow over the windy city. It’s the beginning of a new battle for Kamen Rider W.

The FUUTO PI anime premiered in August 2022, marking the 50th anniversary of the Kamen Rider franchise. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired, making it accessible to a global audience. The manga also inspired a stage play adaptation, which ran from December 2022 to January 2023, further expanding the franchise’s reach.

The original Kamen Rider W series aired from September 2009 to August 2010, starring Renn Kiriyama as Shotaro Hidari and Masaki Suda as Philip. This series remains a beloved entry in the Kamen Rider canon, and the new film promises to add depth and excitement to its legacy.
