This dark fantasy tale follows Bakko Shinno, a socially awkward middle school student who becomes entangled in supernatural warfare. After being left to clean her classroom alone yet again, the isolated girl visits a shrine to silently wish for tranquility and the downfall of her more outgoing peers. Her prayer takes an unexpected turn when she attracts the attention of a mysterious demonic force.
Karasuma previously gained recognition for the Not Lives manga, which ran in Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh from 2011 to 2017 and spanned ten tankobon volumes. The complete series saw English publication through Seven Seas Entertainment after its North American licensing.
More recently, the creator worked on the Kakuregami (Hidden Gods) manga in the same Kadokawa publication from February 2020 until its unexpected cancellation in 2021, resulting in two compiled volumes. Industry observers speculate whether this new project with Square Enix will achieve greater longevity than Karasuma’s previous works.
